Ethics of Charging

I have been having a lot of conversations about the ethics of charging fees for our work on Relocalizing Creativity.

Some people say we must charge so that participants have skin in the game and will show up and value the offer (pay attention.)

Some have gone further to say that many people are attached to money and that therefore we have to work via this attachment.

Others have told me I need to start a limited company or a foundation and charge for the works to be taken seriously.

Still others have said to charge and then give the money away to good causes.

Through SODOTO we ask participants to pay forward. No money exchanges hands.

I do charge businesses for my services at a professional consulting rate. Marc raises money through his airbnb. He believes that we should not be charging for this work. If people need to pay they are not the people we are seeking!

We are planning to run a workshop via the Schumacher Institute. You will see that we are inviting participants to pay what they feel it is worth *after the event*. The funds raised will be used to cover our travelling expenses and any excess will remain with the Schumacher Institute.
